Katie Renfroe, a 4-year-old girl from Paxton, Florida, USA, was born with a genetic disorder called m̲e̲g̲a̲l̲e̲n̲c̲e̲p̲h̲a̲l̲y̲ (large brain disease) that causes her face to have very unusual features.
The girl’s mother, Angie Renfroe, said the disease also caused her daughter to have seizures 50 times a day.
She said: “All we do is love Katie and take care of her. We never treated him like a disabled person.”
It is known that Katie is the 6th of 8 children of Angie and her husband, Danial Renfroe. When she was in the third month of pregnancy, the doctor reported the abnormality of the fetus and diagnosed the baby with m̲e̲g̲a̲l̲e̲n̲c̲e̲p̲h̲a̲l̲y̲ syndrome.
However, with a family living in a rural area, Ms Angie and her husband did not anticipate the consequences that this syndrome would cause. It took a while for the doctor to explain the illness and ask Angie to make a decision.
Angie shared: “At that time, I was trying to think of how to deal with this difficult thing. Finally, I had a choice. I had to give birth to my baby, that’s where she belongs. I’ll take care of it no matter what.”
Last Tuesday, Angie’s family traveled to Hollywood, Florida, where a surgeon at Memorial Hospital will perform the first surgery in Katie’s treatment. They will reduce your baby’s cheeks, do ear surgery, and shorten your baby’s tongue. The team of doctors hope, when the weight is reduced, baby Katie will be more stable.
Ms Angie added: “I have a firm belief. I never regret giving birth to Katie. If God gives you something, don’t give it up.”
