Just two weeks ago, 13-year-old Jerilynn Brown was celebrating the biggest victory of her life \u2014 she had beaten cancer. <\/strong>But on July 4th, a tragic house fire sparked by leftover fireworks stole that hard-earned joy and took her life.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The blaze broke out around 5:30 a.m. at the family\u2019s farmhouse in rural Independence, Missouri, when smoldering fireworks debris ignited the back of the home.<\/p>\n

As the crews arrived on the scene, flames were pouring out from the back of the house. Firefighters launched an intense effort to get the blaze under control.<\/p>\n

Once the fire was extinguished, they found three people inside the home.<\/p>\n

Jerilynn and another adult \u2014 whose name has not yet been publicly released \u2014 were both killed in the fire.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe just rang the bell,\u201d Jerilynn\u2019s father, Jerry Brown, told\u00a0KMBC, referencing the emotional hospital tradition marking the end of cancer treatment.<\/p>\n

Jerilynn had battled osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer, for two years. She was finally discharged from Children\u2019s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City in late June, and her family was just beginning to look ahead \u2014 until this devastating twist.<\/p>\n

Fire officials say the fireworks had been set off the night of July 3rd. Winds picked up overnight, and the embers that had quietly smoldered for hours turned deadly by morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a breezy night,\u201d Independence Fire Chief Jimmy Walker told\u00a0KSHB.<\/p>\n

\u201cHours can elapse while a fire smolders \u2026 We always have to worry about smoldering fires and the fact that they can go undiscovered for a number of hours and eventually can become out of hand quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adding to the tragedy, Walker confirmed that there were no working smoke detectors in the home \u2014 a haunting reminder of how crucial those devices can be.<\/p>\n

Jerilynn\u2019s mother, Liz Stephens, remains hospitalized in critical condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s fighting for her life,\u201d said Jerilynn\u2019s stepfather, Stephen Miller.<\/p>\n

In the wake of the tragedy, the family has created a\u00a0GoFundMe\u00a0page to help cover funeral and medical expenses.<\/p>\n

The fundraiser describes Jerilynn as \u201ca bright, brave, and beautiful soul who had just overcome a long battle with cancer only two weeks prior.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHer strength and spirit touched everyone who knew her. To have her taken so suddenly after all she had endured is beyond heartbreaking,\u201d the family wrote.<\/p>\n

Jerilynn\u2019s father, Jerry, said his daughter\u2019s faith was unshakable \u2014 and it had a powerful impact on those around her.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe just got me to go to church. I quit drinking, 17 months. All that is because of her,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Her stepfather, Stephen Miller, echoed that sentiment, reflecting on the strength Jerilynn carried throughout her young life.<\/p>\n

\u201dUnfortunately, today, she\u2019s no longer with us,\u201d Miller said. \u201dShe\u2019s free.\u201d<\/p>\n

We\u2019re sending all our love, strength, and deepest sympathies to Jerilynn\u2019s family.
\nSuch an unimaginable tragedy, coming just as she had finally beaten cancer.<\/p>\n
