On Sunday, June 29, first responders were called to a home on Herold Highway in Woodstock Township, Michigan, after reports that a 1-year-old\u00a0girl\u00a0had been struck by a riding lawnmower.<\/p>\n

According to the Lenawee County Sheriff\u2019s Office, the call came in around 4:52 p.m. Deputies arrived to find Aurora Shepard with critical injuries,\u00a0Detroit News\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n

Investigators say the child\u2019s 52-year-old\u00a0grandmother\u00a0was mowing the lawn on a riding mower when the accident happened. She was unaware the child had joined her outside, authorities said.<\/p>\n

Aurora was transported to a nearby hospital, but tragically, despite emergency efforts, the baby girl was pronounced\u00a0dead.<\/p>\n

The baby\u2019s relative continues, \u201cIn a single, unimaginable moment, her family\u2019s world changed forever. Now, they are left grieving the sudden loss of their baby girl while facing the emotional and financial weight of laying her to rest.\u201d<\/p>\n

While this tragedy is deeply personal, it highlights a broader safety concern that experts have warned about for years.<\/p>\n

Riding mowers, in particular, are often seen as routine household tools \u2013 but they carry significant risks, especially for toddlers who are small and easily hidden in blind spots.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Children\u2019s Mercy, \u201clawn mower-related incidents are a leading cause of amputations in pediatric patients and the number one cause of major limb loss in children less than 10 years of age.\u201d<\/p>\n

Every year, more than 9,000 \u2013 as many as 17,000 \u2013 children in the United States are injured by lawn mowers,\u00a0and about 75 result in fatalities \u2013 like Aurora.<\/p>\n

In addition, \u201cthe physical consequences of these injuries can be lifelong for the injured child, and the psychological consequences potentially catastrophic for the person (usually a relative) who was operating the mower when the injury occurred.\u201d<\/p>\n

Children\u2019s Mercy advises that young children should be kept indoors or at a safe distance when power mowers are in use. Even brief lapses in supervision can lead to devastating outcomes, especially when a child moves quickly and unexpectedly.<\/p>\n

Aurora\u2019s tragic incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of just how quickly accidents can happen, even in familiar environments.<\/p>\n

Her family now faces an unimaginable loss \u2013 one no parent or loved one should ever endure. In public tributes, her mother and father have shared their heartbreak and their love for a daughter who made every day brighter.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo parent should ever have to experience this kind of heartbreak,\u201d Lindeman writes on the GoFundMe page that has so far raised $10,051 of its $10,000 goal.<\/p>\n

At the moment, no charges have been announced. officials say the incident appears to be a tragic accident and remains under investigation.<\/p>\n
