Nine years after his conservative family was featured on the ABC show “Wife Swap,” Jacob Stockdale fatally shot his mother and brother before attempting to kill himself.<\/h2>\n

The show\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em>\u00a0has a light-hearted premise. For two weeks, families with opposing values and ideologies \u201cexchange\u201d wives. But many viewers don\u2019t know about the so-called\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em>\u00a0murders, when one of the children featured on the show ended up killing his real-life mother and brother.<\/p>\n

On June 15, 2017, 25-year-old Jacob Stockdale fatally shot his mother, Kathryn, and his brother, James, before turning the gun on himself. Though Jacob survived, his motives remain somewhat mysterious.<\/p>\n

But the woman who swapped places with Jacob\u2019s mother for a 2008 episode of\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em>\u00a0has a chilling theory.<\/p>\n

The Stockdale-Tonkovic Episode Of\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em><\/h2>\n

ABC<\/span>One of the families featured in the Stockdale-Tonkovic episode would become victims of the\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em>\u00a0murders.<\/span><\/p>\n

On April 23, 2008, the \u201cStockdale\/Tonkovic\u201d episode of\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em>\u00a0aired on ABC. It featured the Stockdale family from Ohio and the Tonkovic family from Illinois. As usual, the families featured on the show had completely different philosophies about life and raising children.<\/p>\n

The Tonkovic family \u2014 Laurie, her husband John, and their children T-Vic and Meghan \u2014 were easygoing and laid back. \u201cYou only have so long, so enjoy every day as it comes,\u201d Laurie\u00a0said on the show, which depicted her dancing with her children, bringing burgers home, and liberally handing out cash.<\/p>\n

But the Stockdale family \u2014 Kathy, her husband Timothy, and their sons Calvin, Charles, Jacob, and James \u2014 had a totally different perspective on family life. Their version of fun was their \u201cwholesome family bluegrass band.\u201d The children were\u00a0kept in relative seclusion\u00a0\u201cto protect the boys from bad influences\u201d and had to work for privileges like listening to the radio.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t allow any cussing,\u201d Katy Stockdale said. \u201cI think that dating has physical dangers like pregnancy. It\u2019s not worth it. It\u2019s important we have control over their character and their education.\u201d<\/p>\n

As expected, Kathy and Laurie both drummed up drama in their \u201cnew\u201d families. But nine years later, the\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em>\u00a0murders proved that the TV show had only shown the tip of the iceberg in the Stockdale home.<\/p>\n

Inside The\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em>\u00a0Murders<\/h2>\n

Jacob Stockdale\/Facebook<\/span>Jacob Stockdale was a teenager when his family appeared on\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

On June 15, 2017, police responded to a 911 hang-up call at a residence in Beach City, Ohio. According to\u00a0People<\/em>, officers heard a single gunshot when they arrived and entered the home to find Jacob Stockdale, 25, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the head.<\/p>\n

Further inside the house, they also found the bodies of Kathryn Stockdale, 54, and James Stockdale, 21. Quickly, the officers surmised that Jacob had killed his mother and brother, before turning the gun on himself. He was taken to the hospital, where doctors were able to save his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cJames, our youngest brother, has always been a catalyst of family fun,\u201d Calvin Stockdale, the oldest child,\u00a0said in a statement. \u201cHe leaves behind many friends and a family that loved him dearly. My brother, Jacob, is still in critical condition and we are praying for his physical recovery as our family makes funeral plans and begins the healing process.\u201d<\/p>\n

Timothy, the family\u2019s patriarch, also released a statement following the\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em>\u00a0murders. He said, \u201cKathy has been my beloved wife of 32 years and a wonderful mother to our four sons. She loved nothing more than being a mother and grandmother. She had a strong love of learning and was passionate about her Christian faith, natural health, and organic farming.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Jacob Stockdale sufficiently recovered from his wounds, he was charged with the murder of his mother and brother. But why did he do it?<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hard to, you know, kind of surmise what the motive may have been,\u201d\u00a0said Stark County Sheriff George T. Maier\u00a0following the shooting. \u201cThere is some speculation; we don\u2019t really want to get into that part of it but we will continue to investigate this case and try to determine if there is a motive. We just do not know at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Though no official motive was ever released, Laurie Tonkovic, Jacob\u2019s temporary \u201cmother\u201d during the 2008 episode of\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em>, has a theory for why Jacob attacked his family members.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I switched the rules and I was going to let them have fun, let them have a television and video games, and experience life a little bit, [Jacob] ran outside crying,\u201d she told\u00a0TMZ<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd when I went out after him, I asked him what was wrong, and he said that his mom and dad would tell him that he would \u2018burn in hell.\u2019 God gives you free will \u2013 free will, they didn\u2019t have. They weren\u2019t allowed to make choices. I think it just caught up to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laurie speculated that Jacob\u2019s \u201cstrict upbringing\u201d caused him to \u201csnap.\u201d So, where does the case of the\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em>\u00a0murders stand today?<\/p>\n

Stark County Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/span>Jacob Stockdale was found fit to stand trial and sentenced to 30 years in prison for the grisly double murder.<\/span><\/p>\n

Following Jacob Stockdale\u2019s indictment and arrest in October 2018, Jacob pled not guilty by reason of insanity. He spent two years in mental health facilities, from which he tried to escape twice.<\/p>\n

He was later found to be sane at the time of the\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em>\u00a0murders, however, and shortly before his trial in May 2021, he pled guilty to killing his mother and brother. He was handed two 15-year sentences, one for each death, and will spend 30 years in prison.<\/p>\n

To date, the Stockdale family has said little about the\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em>\u00a0murders. Privately,\u00a0they asked the judge\u00a0to approach Jacob\u2019s case with leniency.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Wife Swap<\/em>\u00a0murders stand as a chilling example of the limitations of reality TV. Shows like it claim to give audiences intimate views of other people\u2019s lives.
